Choosing the monitor mount

In one of our previous articles we mentioned that the correct adjustments of the monitor’s position are crucial to organize truly ergonomic workspace. To make such adjustments, it is necessary to choose suiting mount, but the selection of the right mount may be more complicated than it seems. In this article we will provide you with several checkpoints of choosing the perfect monitor mount.

The main factor consists of two characteristics – monitor’s weight and VESA configuration. We gave a detailed explanation of VESA in the previous article. As for monitor’s weight, this parameter should always be double-checked because the mount may not support the necessary weight even if the VESA fits.

Once the mount with matching VESA and weight-carrying capacity is selected, we need to decide on the installation method. The most popular and simple method is based on using clamp, which is really simple to install. However, the use of desk grommet inserted into a pre-drilled hole is more reliable method. There is also a wall-mount option. The use of wall-mounted brackets allows to instantly install monitor at eye level and free the workspace without additional adjustments, but this mounting method is impossible in many cases for obvious reasons.

It is also necessary to remember about the adjustment mechanisms. According to ergonomics, the monitor should be mounted 50-70 cm from the user and also must be adjusted in a way that keeps the lower edge at an angle of 20° relatively to the user’s sightline. Such conditions are easily achieved by using multistaged mounts with angle adjusting mechanisms, which are present in the majority of the models. The exact adjustment range depends on the dimensions of the workplace.

Another significant factor is the number of monitors. If you use only one monitor you can buy any mount but 2 or 3 monitors demand at least 2-stage mounts, allowing for setting an optimal user-to-monitor distance. In case of installations with multiple monitors, such as a stock exchange trading hall or situation center, it is more practical to use videowall type mounts. This configuration allows you to install all monitors at the same level, keeping visual information easy to access.

But the most important thing to remember is that no matter what mount you choose, it should correspond with rules of ergonomics. Only by choosing the right mount and adjusting it ergonomically you may create conditions in which your eyes won’t even notice that the workday is over.
